Eben Freeman's Manhattan

From the kitchen of Carly

A classic Manhattan that respects tradition: rye whiskey and sweet vermouth balanced with bitters, then stirred down until silky. The orange peel oils brighten the whole thing, while a Luxardo cherry on a skewer gives you something to contemplate between sips.

Ingredients

4 servings

  • 1Dash Angostura Bitters
  • 1Dash orange bitters
  • 11 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) sweet vermouth
  • 15 tablespoons (2 1/2 ounces) rye whiskey
  • 11 cup ice
  • 11 (1/2-inch-thick) strip orange peel
  • 11 brandied or Luxardo cherry
  • 11 (4- to 5-inch) wooden skewer

Instructions

  1. In chilled cocktail shaker or pint glass, combine Angostura and orange bitters, vermouth, and rye whiskey. Add ice and stir until well chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into chilled martini or coupe glass. Squeeze orange peel over drink, making sure oils fall into glass, then discard peel. Thread cherry onto skewer, place in drink, and serve.
