Copycat Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme Recipe

From the kitchen of Carly

Inspired by Taco Bell's Crunchwrap Supreme, the wrapped-and-pressed handheld at home. Hot beef, cool sour cream, and that signature tostada layer holding the whole thing together.

Ingredients

4 servings

  • 4 tortillasLarge flour tortillas
  • 4 shellsTostada shells
  • 1 lbGround beef
  • 2 tbspTaco seasoning
  • 0.5 cupWater
  • 0.5 cupNacho cheese sauce
  • 0.5 cupSour cream
  • 1 cupIceberg lettuce, shredded
  • 1 tomatoRoma tomato, diced
  • 0.5 cupSharp cheddar, shredded
  • 2 tbspVegetable oil for the sear

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet, breaking it apart. Drain. Add taco seasoning and water; simmer 4 minutes until thick.

  2. Warm the nacho cheese sauce.

  3. Lay one tortilla flat. In the center, layer beef, then cheese sauce, then a tostada shell, then sour cream, lettuce, tomato, and shredded cheddar.

  4. Fold the tortilla up over the filling in pleats, working around the circle. The center should land like a stop sign with no gap.

  5. Heat oil in a hot pan. Place the wrap seam-side down and weight it lightly with another pan or a flat lid.

  6. Cook 2 minutes per side until golden and crisp. Repeat with the remaining tortillas.

Substitutions
  • Ground beef to Black beans or seasoned lentils. Use 2 cups cooked; works for vegetarian.
  • Nacho cheese sauce to Queso fresco crumbles. Drier; add a teaspoon of olive oil for slip.
  • Sour cream to Plain Greek yogurt. Tangier; thinner. Cuts the richness.

Pairs well with: Pickled red onion, Lime crema, Mexican rice, A cold Mexican lager

Pro tips

  1. Pleat the tortilla tight. Loose folds blow out in the pan.
  2. The tostada is the structural piece. Skipping it collapses the textures into a soggy mess.
  3. A flat-bottomed pot or a heavy lid pressed onto the wrap gives you the smooth, even sear.
